Course Overview

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is designed to provide you with the skills needed to successfully undertake study at an Australian university. You will gain language and study skills as well as build your critical and analytic thinking in preparation for academic education. Our EAP course is designed to reflect study activities undertaken in a higher education environment to ensure you’re ready for your first semester at university.

Students must be assessed at an Upper-Intermediate level of English for entry into the EAP course

Course Structure

Start date Students can join the course at the beginning of Week 1 or Week 6

 Hours per  week 20 hours/week, 5 hours/day Monday – Thursday

 Shift 9.00 am – 2.45 pm Monday – Thursday

 Aim The English for Academic Purpose with IELTS Exam Skills (EAP with IELTS) course has been designed with the goal of improving the capacity of the learner to use the English language in higher education specific contexts as well as preparing students for the IELTS exam.

 Levels EAP1 10 weeks

 Components ACADEMIC SKILLS: Each week the following academic skill sets are studied: Academic Speaking, Academic Reading, Academic Writing, Academic Listening, Study Skills, Grammar extension, Vocabulary extension.IELTS EXAM SKILLS: Students cover the skills required in each section of the IELTS tests of English, both General Training and Academic. Four skills are covered each week (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking).

 Textbooks: Students are given copies of the Cambridge Academic English series to use in the Academic Skills class. Teachers use many different materials in the IELTS Exam Skills class; there is no core textbook.

 Assessment: 1. Academic Skills Assessment. This includes tasks such as an essay, debate, oral presentation, and research assignment. These tasks are assigned at different stages of the course and some class time is devoted to performing the tasks. 2. IELTS Practice Test. Practice test under close-to-test conditions twice every 10- week cycle. Students complete a Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing Test during the IELTS Exam Skills class every fifth Thursday. Students receive a progress report with assessment scores and teacher feedback every five weeks.

IELTS Score (Minimum) SCIC Placement test required for entry – minimum level – successful completion GE Pre-intermediate (equivalent to IELTS 4.5 with no sub-band less than 4.0)
