Diploma of Music in Jazz Performance
Course Overview
JMI’s Diploma of Music in Jazz Performance is a 1-year full time music course endorsed by some of the biggest international jazz artists. This is a performance-based course where students will spend the majority of their contact hours playing their instrument. Each student receives individual one-on-one lessons on their major instrument (voice, guitar, bass, drums, piano, brass or woodwind) supplemented by a variety of music classes that focus on aural skills, jazz theory, improvisation, jazz history and small group ensemble
Course Structure
The Diploma of Music in Jazz Performance is structured exactly the same as the first year of JMI’s Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance.
The one year full-time course is divided into three study areas: Performance, Core Studies and Creative Studies.
Students undertake:
Principal Study (individual lessons with instrumental teacher)
Concert Performance Practice (weekly student performances)
Improvisation Techniques
Small group jazz ensemble
These subjects are supported by the theoretical subjects:
Jazz Materials (music theory)
Aural and Analysis (listening and transcription skills)
Jazz in Context (jazz history)

| Academic Entry Requirements | Every prospective student will need to perform an audition to enter JMI’s courses. The audition process is outlined below for
auditions either in person at our campus in Brisbane or submitted via a video recording. More details can be found on the Website. |

| IELTS Score (Minimum) | International students can use the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) to demonstrate English
Language Proficiency. An applying student will need to achieve an IELTS Score of 6.5 or above with no sub score below
6.0 to be able to enter JMI’s courses. IELTS results must have been achieved no more than 24 months before the applicant
intends to commence this course |
