Your training is a combination of classroom and practical elements like role plays, simulations and compulsory work placement. This gives you the skills and knowledge to provide services that maintain a therapeutic alliance with clients living with mental health issues.
You will also learn how to work from a recovery oriented perspective that is strengths-based and client-centred. You will gain the skills and knowledge to become a practitioner in this sector which includes fields such as counselling, referral, advocacy and education/health promotion services.

Course Structure

The Diploma of Mental Health is made up of the following 20 units of competencies, which are made up of 15 core and 5 elective units:

  2. CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people
  3. CHCDIV002 Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety
  4. CHCMHS002 Establish self‐directed recovery relationships
  5. CHCMHS003 Provide recovery oriented mental health services
  6. CHCMHS004 Work collaboratively with the care network and other services
  7. CHCMHS005 Provide services to people with co‐existing mental health and alcohol and other drugs issues
  8. CHCMHS009 Provide early intervention, health prevention and promotion programs
  9. CHCMHS010 Implement recovery oriented approaches to complexity
  10. CHCMHS011 Assess and promote social, emotional and physical wellbeing
  11. CHCMHS012 Provide support to develop wellness plans and advanced directives
  12. CHCMHS013 Implement trauma informed care

Entry Requirement

Admission Requirements
Academic Entry Requirements Provide evidence of completing at least the equivalent of Australian Year 12,
Minimum Age to Apply Be at least 18 years of age.
Language Requirement
IELTS Score (Minimum) ALG requires an English proficiency level of IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent), with no individual band under 5.5.
English Language Requirements A prospective student does not need to provide evidence of an English test score with their application if one of the following applies:
  • Prospective student is a citizen and holds a passport from UK, USA, Canada, NZ or Republic of Ireland.
  • Prospective student has completed at least 5 years’ study in English in one or more of the following countries: Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the Republic of Ireland.
  • Completed at least 6 months of a Certificate IV level course in an Australian RTO.

Internship or Work Placements

A minimum 400 hour work placement will be undertaken in your period of study. In this work placement you will be learning and practicing the skills you will be able to use in your own workplace. In order to successfully complete this component of your study, you will have to have a successful supervisor report, work place visit from a trainer and assessor and also submit a competent work placement log book.
