Course Overview

Community Services is a sector with a variety of challenging and interesting roles and opportunities allowing you to specialise in the sector or work as a generalist. Our Community Services Course will help prepare you for the outside world.
You may be involved in managing, coordinating and/or delivering of person-centered services to individuals, groups and communities. You will be providing direct support to individuals or groups of individuals using a strengths based case management model. There are a range of fields Community Services workers provide support including:
  • Child, Youth and Family
  • Disability
  • Community Mental Health
  • Drugs and Alcohol Treatments
  • Domestic and Family Violence
  • Housing
  • Working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People
  • Working with older people
  • Migration and refugee support and settlement
  • Job Network Providers

Course Structure

The Diploma of Community Services is made up of the following 16 units of competencies, which are made up of 8 core and 8 elective units:

  1. CHCCCS007 Develop and implement service programs
  2. CHCCOM003 Develop workplace communication strategies
  3. CHCDEV002 Analyse impacts of sociological factors on clients in community work and services
  4. CHCDIV003 Manage and promote diversity
  5. CHCLEG003 Manage legal and ethical compliance
  6. CHCMGT005 Facilitate workplace debriefing and support processes
  7. CHCPRP003 Reflect on and improve own professional practice
  8. HLTWHS004 Manage work health and safety
  9. CHCCCS004 Assess co-existing needs
  10. CHCCSL001 Establish and confirm the counselling relationship
  11. CHCCSM005 Develop, facilitate and review all aspects of case management
  12. CHCDEV001 Confirm client developmental status
  13. CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people
  14. CHCDIV002 Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural safety

Entry Requirement

Admission Requirements
Academic Entry Requirements Provide evidence of completing at least the equivalent of Australian Year 12,
Minimum Age to Apply Be at least 18 years of age.
Language Requirement
IELTS Score (Minimum) ALG requires an English proficiency level of IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent), with no individual band under 5.5.
English Language Requirements A prospective student does not need to provide evidence of an English test score with their application if one of the following applies:
  • Prospective student is a citizen and holds a passport from UK, USA, Canada, NZ or Republic of Ireland.
  • Prospective student has completed at least 5 years’ study in English in one or more of the following countries: Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the Republic of Ireland.
  • Completed at least 6 months of a Certificate IV level course in an Australian RTO.

Internship or Work Placements

A minimum 200 hour work placement will be undertaken in your period of study. In this work placement you will be learning and practicing the skills you will be able to use in your own workplace. In order to successfully complete this component of your study, you will have to have a successful supervisor report, work place visit from a trainer and assessor and also submit a competent work placement log book.
