Course Overview

Ideally you will be working in aged care services so that you can build on the skills learnt in the Certificate III in Individual Support.
This qualification will allow you to advance in your career in aged care, by preparing you to support elderly clients in specialised tasks and functions but also in a variety of settings.
By completing this aged care course you will build a foundation for supervising other support workers, advocating for the elderly within a caring and legal and ethical framework.

Course Structure

The Certificate IV in Ageing Support is made up of the following 18 units of competencies, which are made up of 15 core and 3 elective units:

  2. CHCAGE002 Implement falls prevention strategies
  3. CHCAGE005 Provide support to people living with dementia
  4. CHCCCS011 Meet personal support needs
  5. CHCCCS023 Support independence and wellbeing
  6. CHCCCS015 Provide individualised support
  7. CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people
  8. HLTAAP001 Recognise healthy body systems
  9. HLTWHS002 Follow safe work practices for direct client care
  10. HLTAID003 Provide first aid
  11. CHCADV001 Facilitate the interests and rights of clients
  12. CHCAGE003 Coordinate services for older people
  13. CHCAGE004 Implement interventions with older people at risk
  14. CHCCCS006 Facilitate individual service planning and delivery
  15. CHCCCS025 Support relationships with carers and families 
  16. CHCLEG003 Manage legal and ethical compliance

Academic Entry Requirements

Prerequisite for entry into this course is the completion of CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) completed at ALG or at minimum, the completion of the following units of competency:

  • CHCAGE001 Facilitate the empowerment of older people
  • CHCAGE002 Implement falls prevention strategies
  • CHCAGE005 Provide support to people living with dementia
  • CHCCCS011 Meet personal support needs
  • CHCCCS015 Provide individualised support
  • CHCCCS023 Support independence and wellbeing
  • CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people
  • HLTAAP001 Recognise healthy body systems
  • HLTWHS002 Follow safe work practices for direct client care
  • HLTAID011 Provide first aid

Additionally international applicants must provide evidence of completing at least the equivalent of Australian Year 10.

Minimum Age to Apply Be at least 18 years of age.
Language Requirement
IELTS Score (Minimum) ALG requires an English proficiency level of IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent), with no individual band under 5.0.
English Language Requirements A prospective student does not need to provide evidence of an English test score with their application if one of the following applies:
  • Prospective student is a citizen and holds a passport from UK, USA, Canada, NZ or Republic of Ireland.
  • Prospective student has completed at least 5 years’ study in English in one or more of the following countries: Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the Republic of Ireland.
  • Completed at least 6 months of a Certificate IV level course in an Australian RTO.

Internship or Work Placements

A 150 hour work placement will be undertaken in your last term of study. In this work placement you will be learning and practicing the skills you will be able to use in your own workplace. In order to successfully complete this component of your study, you will have to have a successful supervisor report, work place visit from a trainer and assessor and also submit a competent work placement log book.
