Course Overview

The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) is designed to position graduates as professional software developers. It has been designed to provide a thorough understanding and application of fundamental principles of Information Technology such as problem investigation, requirements elicitation, solution design, software implementation, and deployment. Graduates of this course will have the opportunity and ability to engage with Information Technology projects where they can practice their professional and technical abilities.

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Information Technology is an undergraduate qualification consisting of 24 subjects (240 credit points), taught face to face in English, which normally takes three years of full-time study or part-time equivalent.

The course structure consists of:

12 core IT subjects including 2 capstone project subjects, and

an IT major of 8 subjects, and

either 4 minor subjects or an extended IT major of 4 subjects.

To be awarded the Bachelor of Information Technology with a specialisation in Software Development, students must complete 24 subjects (240 credit points) which must include the 12 core subjects and the software development major of 8 subjects listed below.

The maximum duration to complete the course is 8 years.

Entry Requirement

Admission Requirements
Minimum Age to Apply To be eligible for admission, the applicant must be at least 18 years of age on the course commencement date.
Academic Entry Requirements
  • completed two years or longer of study in Australia; or
  • successful completion of an Australian Year 12 program; or
  • successful completion of an English language course approved by AIAT from a registered English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) provider. Such courses give students the minimum English Language Proficiency (ELP) standard as specified in Table A of the admissions policy; or
  • achievement of the minimum requirements in an approved English language test no less than 24 months prior to commencement of studies at AIAT.
